30 Great Things to Do in Vermont

Visit Vermont to see pristine mountains
and enjoy warm, welcoming people

Vermont, the Green Mountain state, is the place to simply stand still and enjoy the beauty of outdoors and nature, or to ramp up the fun with help from nature’s resources: skiing or snow tubing on the frosted mountains; joining other dazzled leaf peepers to gaze at the brilliant fall foliage; hiking, biking, fishing, or paddling through the cool forests; playing a round of golf on smoothly cultivated hillsides. In winter, Vermont is the mecca for skiing at a number of mountains from massive to intimate. Famous Vermont ski areas include Stowe, Killington, and Mount Snow, among many others. Activities for children and families cover a wonderful range of outdoor fun in the lakes and mountains, nature, art, and history museums, and visits to hospitable farms

Visitors taking Vermont vacations receive a cozy, often old-fashioned welcome at lodgings that can range from small B&Bs to country inns to modern resorts with spas and other luxuries. Vermonters are serious about good cooking and dining, and they are uber-serious about supporting their farmers by using locally produced foods, including milk, cheese and chocolate from the state’s famous dairy farms, along with locally produced meat and vegetables. Vermont’s fall foliage is among the most spectacular in the world, thanks to its native population of sugar maples, which also provide a plentiful array of maple-charged treats.

Historic sites feature the people and places of the American Revolution; fascinating museums as well as art and theater and music venues help offset the abundant outdoor and winter activities. A must-see part of Vermont is Lake Champlain and its environs, named for the 17th-century French explorer Samuel de Champlain. The lake a beautiful, as are its islands and the farms and towns tucked into the rolling Champlain Valley. Shopping in country stores, galleries, museum stores, or at sprawling outlet communities is welcomed and encouraged. At day’s start or day’s end, native refreshments include maple syrup, apples, cheese, and chocolate. Beauty ranges from rustic to refined, and it all feels special to the Vermont way of life.
