Shopping for fine crafts and artisan work is rewarding in Vermont

New England is a wonderful place to shop for fine crafts and handmade artisan work because of its long history, economic ingenuity, and rural traditions. A sterling example is silverwork and pewter work crafted by Paul Revere of Boston, which continues to influence today's artists. Most states have guilds of artists, artisans, and crafts makers that promote local artistry and bring artisan products to the market. Local fine crafts often can be found at the larger farmers markets and festivals.

Crafts in Vermont include a bit of just about everything. Wonderful fine crafts and art with a very Vermont sensibility can be found at the Frog Hollow craft gallery in Burlington, featuring work from jewelry to pottery to wood crafts. The Vermont Teddy Bear Company in Shelburne is the largest maker of hand-crafted Teddy Bears in the country. As in other states, quilt makers are busy in Vermont. The huge Vermont Quilt Festival takes place yearly at the Essex Junction. Simon Pearce is legendary in the world of fine artisan glass. Guests may tour the Simon Pearce Historic Mill in Quechee and Windsor.
