Vermont’s natural beauty is so great, you can enjoy it even from roads and highways (it doesn’t hurt that the state bans billboards). For an even deeper adventure, consider renting a snowmobile or, in the warm seasons, an ATV (all-terrain vehicle) to explore deep into the back country of the Green Mountain State. Many businesses will rent out the vehicles – known by insiders as “sleds” – along with all necessary clothing and gear. Instruction is given to newcomers to the sport, and some companies offer guided tours, in which a seasoned driver mans the controls until the guest renter is ready to take over. Snowmobiles carry a driver and a passenger, so it is a naturally good fit for couples and pairs of friends. The Vermont Association of Snow Travelers or VAST oversees a network of groomed trails, so there is always a new circuit to ride and new vistas to enjoy. The sport is extra-popular near and around snowy Stowe, Killington, Okemo and Mount Snow, VT. The warmer and greener seasons bring a natural urge to explore Vermont’s river valleys and mountains, so a good option is renting an ATV or a UTV (utility terrain vehicle—sometimes called a side-by-side – with an enclosed cab). As with winter adventures on snowmobiles, an ATV can take you and friends on a thrilling exploration into the heart of this beautiful state.
