Stowe, Vermont and Ski Vermont Visitor Information at Visit Vermont
When Vermont’s Green Mountains become cloaked white with snow the opportunities for fun and relaxation are as varied as snowflakes. From the hardcore downhill skier, to the urbanite seeking a relief from cabin fever, Vermont will provide what you need and more.
You can live a Currier & Ives experience in picturesque villages like Stowe and Woodstock where horse-drawn sleighs carry you across sparkling white meadows and along trails overarched with pine boughs. If the Call of the Wild warmed your blood there are dog sleds you help to mush. As when you were a kid, or if you’re enjoying the company of children, there’s no better snow fun than sliding down hill on your stomach. Snow tubing can be found at many ski mountains with the advantage of being carried up hill by lifts. (Where was this in my youth, I ask?) And many lodgings will have a great sliding hill on the property or nearby, with sleds and toboggans for you to use.
Winter in Vermont is best renowned for skiing and snowboarding. There are major ski resorts with 2,000 foot vertical drops and excellent facilities. Most feature terrain parks and half pipes. There are also numerous of glade runs for skiing among the trees. Cross country skiing is as close as the door of your lodging, but there are many groomed and maintained trails at cross country ski centers. There’s no better exercise, with the added benefit of beautiful scenery and wildlife viewing.
Snowmobilers have 5,000 miles of maintained trails to ride that traverse every type of terrain. The trails are maintained by local clubs coordinated by the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST). If you’re planning to bring your own machine to Vermont you need to contact VAST regarding fees and regulations. There are also numerous snowmobiles rental and tour businesses that can introduce you to this growing winter activity.
