Dummerston Apple Pie Festival -- Dummerston October 12, 2008 For more than 40 years, the Dummerston Apple Pie Festival has been held each year on the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend, the peak of colorful autumn foliage in Southern Vermont. Fifteen hundred apple pies are made by many church members and friends. Folks from all over the United States travel by motorcycle and automobiles to take part in the festivities. In addition, the festival serves Vermont cheddar cheese, homemade ice cream, cider, coffee, donuts. Also, the Dummerston Volunteer Fire Department has a pancake breakfast the same morning starting about 7 a.m. and the Grange sponsors a flea market/tag sale during the day. Actors and Exorcists - Masks of Sri Lanka
Robert Hull Fleming Museum -- Burlington Now through June 8, 2008 In the exorcism dance rituals and folk plays of Sri Lanka, devils, animals and humans are represented by elaborately carved and painted masks.
Southern Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage includes two dances that use masks - the thovil, or exorcism dances, in which masked demons drive illness and misfortune away, and the kolam folk drama, a community entertainment performed traditionally for centuries. The Social Roles of Ceramics in Asia
Middlebury College Center for the Arts, Museum of Art - Middlebury Now through August 10, 2008 This exhibition explores the practical and social uses of ceramics in Asia in places such as tombs, temples, palaces. Asian ceramics are the most varied in the world: they have been used for vessels, ritual objects, sculpture, and architectural ornament. They are also unrivaled in technical quality and sheer volume. They lay at the very heart of the tea ceremony in Korea and Japan, while in the Islamic world ceramic tiles were indispensable to architectural facades. Asian ceramics, particularly Chinese, were exported in staggering quantities and exerted a profound influence on Western ceramics.
